In our opinion, there are few things better than a really good Traditional Guacamole. It’s such a simple dish but packs so much flavor and can enhance a ton of other recipes. It’s wonderful just with a handful of tortilla chips, as a compliment to several Mexican-style recipes or even as a component of a non-traditional dish like our Carne Asada Spring Rolls.
If you’ve never made it at home, you’re missing out. So, I’m going to show you how to make a simple yet fantastic Traditional Guacamole that you can use this weekend, just in time for Super Bowl Sunday!
As I already mentioned, a Traditional Guacamole is a pretty simple dish. All you need are 6 ingredients; Avocados, Tomatoes, Onion, Fresh Lime Juice, Cilantro and Salt. That’s it!
Now, I know some people are a little intimidated by picking out ripe Avocados. You really shouldn’t be. It’s not as tough as it seems. To figure out if an Avocado is ripe enough for use in your recipes, the first thing you’ll want to do is give it a light squeeze. If it feels really hard, it’s not right yet. If it’s mushy, it’s probably over-ripe. What you’re looking for is it to give just slightly when squeezed. That will ensure it’s perfect.
The other complaint I hear the most about Avocados is that you can’t tell when it will be brown on the inside. The best way to ensure yours have that perfect color is to take a look at the area where the stem is located. Remove the little piece of stem that remains and see what the color inside happens to be. If it’s green, you should be good to go. If it’s brown…well…I’m sure you can figure it out.
One more note about the ingredients. I use Roma Tomatoes. They are just the type I prefer. However, fell free to use whatever style you like. It really won’t affect your finished recipe.
Creating our Traditional Guacamole is not a particularly difficult process. The most troublesome thing is just the dicing of the components. From there, it’s just adding all the ingredients to a bowl, mashing them together and seasoning to your preferred taste.
That’s it!
That’s the recipe!
What do you mean that’s not enough?
Okay. Here are a few more details.
Let’s start with the size of the vegetable dice. Now, I like a “chunkier” style of Guacamole. I like to know all the ingredients are there when I get a bite of it. That being said, you don’t want the Onion or Tomato to dominate any single bite. So, you’ll want to cut those components a bit on the smaller side.
Once you’ve diced them all add the Onion, Tomatoes and chopped Fresh Cilantro to a medium-sized bowl.
Now we get to the most important part of our Traditional Guacamole. Of course, I’m talking about the Avocado. The best way to approach adding it to this recipe is by, sort of, pre-dicing it.
Begin by cutting each Avocado in half and removing the pit. Next, you’ll want to make several cross cuts of the meat, within the shell itself, just like in the photo above. Then take a spoon and simply scoop the meat into the bowl.
The very next thing you’ll want to do is add the Fresh Lime Juice to the rest of the components. This is a very important ingredient that you won’t want to skip out on. For one, it brightens up the flavor of the dish. Secondly, it helps keep the Avocado from oxidizing, which is what causes it to turn brown. Now, adding Lime Juice won’t completely keep it from eventually turning brown. However, it will slow the process
Now that you have all the diced, chopped and juiced components in the bowl, it’s time to get the whole thing together. Start by adding a little bit of Kosher or Sea Salt and then begin to mix the components. You can be a little rough when stirring this dish because the goal is to eventually mash them all together. How much you smash them will depend on how “chunky” you prefer your Guacamole.
Once you have all the components mixed together almost to your preferred consistency, you’ll want to taste it to see if you need to adjust the seasonings. If necessary, add a little more Salt and/or Lime Juice until you have the flavor you prefer. Mix together and you’re done.
Serve immediately or place plastic wrap directly on top of your Guac, to protect it from the oxygen which will cause it to brown, and store in the refrigerator.
This Traditional Guacamole hits all the notes. The Avocado is luxurious and flavorful complimented by the sweetness from the Tomatoes and Onion, which also provide a little bite. The Lime Juice adds a little tartness and acid and the Cilantro provides an wonderful herbaceous touch.
